MODEL ROCKETRY
DESIGN AND BUILD COURSE:
SUNDAYS, 2:00-3:30 PM – SIGN UP HERE
This course will guide students through the fundamentals of model rocketry, from basic aerodynamics and propulsion principles to hands-on design and construction. By the end of the course, students will successfully design, build, and launch their own model rockets.
April 6 - Week 1: Introduction to Model Rocketry
•History and evolution of rocketry
•Basic physics of flight (Newton’s laws of motion)
•Overview of model rocket components and materials
•Building a model rocket using a kit
April 13-Week 2: Aerodynamics and Design Principles
•Forces acting on a rocket (thrust, drag, lift, gravity)
•Rocket stability and center of gravity
•Basic design software tools (e.g., OpenRocket or RockSim)
•Sketching initial designs and concepts of a custom rocket
April 27 - Week 3: Materials and Construction Techniques
•Choosing materials for the body, fins, and nose cone
•Building techniques (cutting, sanding, and gluing)
•Introduction to 3D printing components (optional)
•Assembling the airframe and fins
May 4 - Week 4: Propulsion Systems and Recovery Mechanisms
•Types of model rocket engines and classifications
•Engine selection and installation
•Recovery systems: parachutes, streamers, and tumble recovery
May 10 (Saturday) - Week 5: launch in Acton, 10:30am - 1:00pm, see directions to site below.
