Science Fiction Literature and Film Club

For all members who enjoy sci-fi short stories, novels, and movies, the club meets occasionally and informally, often as part of other workshops or Home School classes.

We read and discuss literature, watch and discuss classic sci-fi films, write our own stories, and generally encourage people to get creative and write their own stories.

Many of the stories we are currently posting here evolved from a literature workshop we did in Home School.

Fostering Critical Thinking Skills

Students are encouraged to read as much as possible to learn from the writing of other authors. They should analyze the style, genre, imagery, vocabulary, and other elements of literature, discuss these with others informally or in a workshop.

Writing and Participation is Encouraged

Students may submit their own short stories to be read by others and artwork to be showcased here or at NEST. Inquire through the Contact Us web page.

Recommend a Book or Movie

Students may recommend books they've read or movies they've watched. Our focus is on Sci-Fi, but fiction that illustrates good science concepts is welcome.  One of our favorites in Home School classes is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. One of our favorite movies is Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan.

Richard M. Powers (1921 – 1996) was an American science fiction and fantasy fiction illustrator. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2016. This is a photo of one of his original works in a private collection. (It was angled during photographing to reduce reflections from the glass.)
